Chapter Twelve
Waking to the smell of hot coffee is wonderful. Waking to hot coffee, the sun shining and the man you love next to you in bed is better, JoAnna thought, looking up into Jeff’s face.
“Good morning, gorgeous. Did you sleep well?” He asked, sipping a cup of coffee. He had already taken a shower and made coffee. He was sitting against the headboard, obviously waiting for her to wake up.
To JoAnna he looked perfect. “I slept great. Thank you.” She didn't want to get up. She would have loved to stay in bed with him all day. The night before had been the best night of her life, and she hadn't wanted it to ever end.
But then she noticed the time. “Oh, my God, look at the time! I've got to get moving.” He had let her sleep past eight. She threw the blankets off and ran into the bathroom. The shower started. Then the door flew open, and JoAnna reached out, took the coffee cup out of his hand, and took a big drink. She handed it back to him and dashed back into the bathroom.
By the time she finished showering and dressing, Jeff had made breakfast. It was waiting for her at the table. She stood in the doorway and watched as he moved about the kitchen with ease. The record player in the living room was playing a Tom Jones album, and Jeff was singing right along.
“You know...you look pretty good standing there in front of the stove,” she teased as she moved closer to him.
“I look good doing just about anything,” he said, his eyes twinkling as he pulled her into his arms.
Snuggling close, she added, “All you need now is an apron that says ‘KISS THE COOK’.”
“I don't need any apron,” he said, kissing her once hard on the lips. “Are you hungry?”
“Hungry? Hungry for what?” she asked, running her hands over his chest.
“Well, right now, food.”
“It smells wonderful.”
He had fried eggs and bacon and made toast. The table was also set with two plates, utensils and two glasses of milk. JoAnna's heart tightened in her chest at the quaint picture it made. She knew that after today her life would return to the way it had been before he came. Therefore, she planned to enjoy herself today and worry about tomorrow, tomorrow.
Jeff pointed to the table, motioning for her to sit then served her. He had several things he wanted to talk to Jo about that morning. He hadn't slept much the night before as he tried to piece the puzzle together. He just didn't know where to start or how she would take it. They ate in silence for a number of minutes before either spoke.
“I can't believe it’s Christmas again. This year simply flew by,” she stated. “I've been so busy I haven't even decorated the house yet.” A sad smile crossed her face, briefly. “Maybe I'll just wait until next year.”
“I remember the way your mother used to decorate the house.
